St. Michael West

Christopher Gibbs is an engineer, business leader, and Member of Parliament who brings a results-driven approach to national development and constituency-level delivery. He currently serves as Minister of Housing, Lands and Maintenance, and represents the people of St. Michael West.

He holds a Bachelor’s (Hons) and a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tech), specialising in fibre optic sensor systems and wireless communication networks.

Chris began his professional career in the wireless industry in the United States, working for four years as a Wireless RF Engineer. He is also recognised as one of the first engineers to test 3G wireless networks in the U.S.

He served as Chairman of Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. for seven years, leading the organisation through a period that delivered major tourism development and infrastructure projects, and national initiatives such as the National Performing Arts Centre and Carifesta Village. Tourism development projects included the Wyndham Sam Lords Castle Hotel.

Before his elevation to ministerial office, Christopher also led family businesses as Managing Director of Pelican Produce and Scottys Fresh Market for seven years — businesses described as the largest distributors of fresh produce in Barbados.

His vision for housing in Barbados centres on delivering affordable, climate-resilient, dignified living solutions through an industrial approach to building, reducing urban sprawl by reallocating families into more sustainable housing options, applying innovative building techniques that emphasise resilience and sustainability, and implementing maintenance strategies to renovate existing housing stock with a focus on climate resilience, beautification, and energy independence.

In public life, Christopher’s blend of technical training, management experience, and project delivery reflects a commitment to practical solutions, with an emphasis on building stronger communities and improving quality of life for the people of St. Michael West and Barbados.
