Dwight Sutherland

St. George South

Dwight Sutherland is an engineer, business leader, and long-serving parliamentarian whose work has combined technical expertise, community development, and national service.

Born in Ellerton, St. George, he was educated at Ellerton Primary School and The Lodge School before earning a BSc in Mechanical Engineering (Upper Second Class Honours) from the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus. He later obtained a Master of Business Administration in International Business with Distinction from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom.

After leaving UWI in 1992, Dwight briefly taught Mathematics and Science at Harrison College before launching his engineering career at Coles Engineering. He later joined Trinidad Cement Limited, where he was recruited to help reopen the Arawak Cement plant. Over a twenty-year period, he rose through the ranks from Trainee Engineer to Project Engineer, Materials Manager, Maintenance Manager, Production Manager, and ultimately Operations Manager — the company’s highest technical position. During this time, he also lectured in International Business at UWI Cave Hill for two years.

Dwight entered parliamentary life as Opposition Member of Parliament for St. George South from 2013 to 2018, and has served as Government Member of Parliament from 2018 to 2025. During this period, he held several ministerial portfolios, including Minister of Small Business, Commerce and Energy (2018–2020), Minister of Youth, Sport and Community Empowerment (2020–2022), and Minister of Housing, Lands and Maintenance (2022–2025).

His ministerial record includes pioneering Barbados’ first Vending Policy, digitising the liquor licence registration system, restructuring the Barbados National Standards Institute, and advancing major reforms in the small business sector. These included the establishment of the National Trust Fund Limited in 2019, which distributed $4 million in seed capital benefiting approximately 4,000 small businesses, the formation of cooperatives for contractors and artisans, and the refurbishment and modernisation of community centres across the island. He also expanded community sporting infrastructure through the installation of lights at playing fields and the development of more than 20 road tennis courts.

As Minister of Housing, Dwight played a key role in the construction and repair of over 1,500 houses damaged or destroyed during Hurricane Elsa.

Outside of formal politics, he has been deeply involved in community life. A former cricket captain for The Lodge School, he has remained active in sport through the Malvern Sport and Cultural Club and currently serves as President of the Ellerton Sports and Social Academy. He is also the owner and Managing Director of Blue Grid Solutions Inc., a mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering firm operating in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.

Dwight is married to Juliette and is the father of one son. His career reflects a blend of technical competence, community engagement, and sustained public service.
